Diepsloot, Afrikaans for “deep ditch”, is a densely populated township in Gauteng, South Africa. It is located in the Region A of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. There are high levels of crimes here including illegal electricity connections and theft.

What is the main function of Diepsloot?

Diepsloot is one of Johannesburg’s newest towns. It was established in 1994, as a relocation area for informally settled households from Zevenfontein. In less than 20 years Diepsloot has grown into a bustling neighbourhood covering approximately 5 km2 with a population of more than 160 000.

What are the problem in Diepsloot?

This is because majority of the people in Diepsloot live in abject poverty with inadequate housing and high levels of unemployment, crime, and disease. Much of the economic activity in the area is survivalist with profit margins insufficient to get people out of the poverty traps they find themselves in.v

What are the social and environmental issues in Diepsloot?

Diepsloot is plagued with leaks from power infrastructure and piles of discarded trash. Poor infrastructure and overpopulation in Diesploot causes sewage to seep up through the ground, while the overuse of their facilities results in pipes leaking, taps dripping, and toilets not flushing.
